Where to Eat After Midnight in New York

New York's reputation as a 24-hour city took a real hit in the last decade. The all-night diners thinned out, a few legendary 4am kitchens moved to earlier hours, and plenty of places that used to run until dawn now close at 10pm. Great NY Noodletown, long a Chinatown late-night ritual, closes at 11pm at the latest now. Punjabi Deli on East 1st Street, the cab drivers' 24-hour canteen, keeps daytime hours.

But the city still feeds you after midnight, if you know where to go. This guide is built for the 1am to 5am window, when the bars are closing and you need something hot, fast and good. Every spot was checked against official sites and 2025 to 2026 listings. Hours move, especially on weeknights, so treat them as a guide and check before a long trek.

Katz's Delicatessen

Lower East Side · 205 E Houston St · $$

The pastrami is the reason, and it is still the best in the city: hand-carved, piled high, fatty and peppery on rye with mustard. Katz's closes at 11pm Monday to Thursday but opens at 8am Friday and stays open straight through to 11pm Sunday, which makes it the greatest weekend 3am meal in New York. Hold on to your ticket; you need it to leave.

Go for: a pastrami on rye, a pickle and a cream soda at 3am Saturday. Know before you go: the line moves fast after 2am; tip the carver and you get a taste while you wait.

Veselka

East Village · 144 2nd Ave · $$

A Ukrainian East Village institution since 1954 that brought back 24-hour service on Fridays and Saturdays in April 2026. The borscht, pierogi and potato pancakes are exactly what a body wants at 4am. Monday to Thursday it runs until midnight.

Empanada Mama

Hell's Kitchen · 765 9th Ave · $

Forty-plus kinds of Colombian and Latin American empanadas, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Lower East Side location at 95 Allen St is also open around the clock, which is useful for post-bar crowds. The Times Square outpost runs until 3am on Thursday to Saturday.

Go for: a mixed plate of beef, cheese and plantain empanadas with green sauce. Know before you go: the 3am Friday crowd is loud; get it to go if you want peace.

Coppelia

Chelsea · 207 W 14th St · $$

A 24-hour pan-Latin diner with a colorful room and a menu that runs from breakfast to full dinner at any hour. The Cubano, ropa vieja and challah French toast all hold up at 4am. It is warm, welcoming and one of the best LGBTQ-friendly late-night spots in the city.

Go for: a Cubano and a café con leche. Know before you go: weekend nights get a line after the clubs let out.

The Donut Pub

West Village · 203 W 14th St · $

An old-school donut counter open 24 hours, seven days a week, a few doors down from Coppelia. There is a second location at 740 Broadway near Astor Place, also 24/7. Nothing fancy, just donuts, coffee and a counter stool at an hour when nobody should be eating donuts.

Go for: a glazed cruller and a coffee at the counter. Know before you go: cash makes it faster.

Kellogg's Diner

Williamsburg · 518 Metropolitan Ave · $$

The Williamsburg diner that never closes, with a menu of pancakes, burgers, wings and omelets for every hour of the night. It is the default post-bar landing strip for North Brooklyn. The honey butter chicken biscuit gets a lot of love.

Court Square Diner

Long Island City · 45-30 23rd St · $

A classic 24-hour Queens diner a block from Court Square. Breakfast, sandwiches, burgers, whatever you need, whenever you need it.

Go for: a deluxe cheeseburger platter at 2am. Know before you go: it is a short walk from the 7, E, M and G trains.

Tick Tock Diner

Midtown · 481 8th Ave · $$

A shiny 24-hour diner across from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden, which makes it the post-concert and last-train move. Diner staples, generous portions, nonstop service.

Go for: eggs, home fries and coffee after a Garden show. Know before you go: it is busiest right after big events let out.

Joe's Pizza

Greenwich Village · 7 Carmine St · $

The classic New York slice since 1975: thin, foldable, perfectly balanced cheese. Carmine Street stays open into the early morning, and the line moves fast even at 2am. It is the benchmark every other slice gets measured against. Our pizza slices guide has more.

Mamoun's Falafel

Greenwich Village · 119 MacDougal St · $

A MacDougal Street falafel counter that has fed NYU students and bar crawlers for decades. The falafel sandwich is cheap, crispy and exactly right after a few drinks. It stays open late, into the early morning most nights.

Go for: a falafel sandwich with hot sauce. Know before you go: it is tiny; eat on the street.

Crif Dogs

East Village · 113 St Marks Pl · $

Bacon-wrapped hot dogs, cheesy tots and a phone booth that leads to PDT, one of the most famous cocktail bars in the world. Crif Dogs has been serving St Marks since 2001, and it stays open until 2am Sunday to Thursday and 3am on Friday and Saturday.

7th Street Burger

East Village · 91 E 7th St · $

The smashburger shop that started in the East Village in 2021 and grew into a chain, still best at the original. Thin, crispy-edged double cheeseburgers and fries, open until 1am weeknights and later on weekends.

Go for: a double cheeseburger and fries. Know before you go: late-night hours vary by location; the original is the safest bet.

Datz Deli

Lower East Side · 69 Clinton St · $

A Guyanese-style deli famous for the Mac Patty, a beef patty stuffed with macaroni and cheese, and its oxtail version with gravy. It stays open until 2:30am on Friday and Saturday, which makes it the Lower East Side's best weekend late-night bite. Pair it with our Lower East Side guide.

Itaewon Pocha

Koreatown · 28 W 32nd St, 2nd floor · $$

A lively Korean gastropub with soju cocktails, K-pop and a menu of kimchi pancakes, rice cakes, fried chicken and seafood fried rice. It runs until 2am most nights and 4am on Friday and Saturday.

Go for: kimchi pancake and a soju cocktail at 2am. Know before you go: it gets loud; that is the point.

The Commodore

Williamsburg · 366 Metropolitan Ave · $

A divey Williamsburg bar with a famous fried chicken sandwich, piña coladas and frozen drinks. It opens at 11am and the bar runs until 4am, though the kitchen closes earlier. Eat first, then stay.

Go for: the fried chicken sandwich and a frozen drink. Know before you go: the kitchen closes around 2am.

Blue Ribbon Brasserie

SoHo · 97 Sullivan St · $$$

The restaurant chefs go to after their own kitchens close, open until 2am daily. Beef marrow, raw bar and a French-American menu make it the grown-up late-night choice. It is the rare 1am meal that feels like a real dinner.

Go for: bone marrow and a dozen oysters at 1am. Know before you go: it is pricier than anything else on this list.

Sylla

East Harlem · 1664 Park Ave · $$

A West African restaurant open until 2am daily, serving grilled red snapper, peanut butter stew and jollof rice. It is warm, generous and one of the best late-night meals uptown.

Go for: grilled fish and jollof rice. Know before you go: no alcohol is served.

Late-night food by neighborhood

East Village and Lower East Side. The best late-night zone in the city. On a weekend you can walk from Katz's to Veselka to Crif Dogs to 7th Street Burger without crossing more than a dozen blocks, and Empanada Mama's Allen Street location and Datz Deli fill in the gaps. This is where the bars are, so this is where the food is.

Greenwich Village. Joe's Pizza on Carmine and Mamoun's on MacDougal cover the post-bar crowd from the West Village and the MacDougal Street comedy clubs. Blue Ribbon Brasserie is a few blocks east in SoHo when you want a real meal.

Chelsea and 14th Street. Coppelia and The Donut Pub sit on the same stretch of West 14th Street and both run 24 hours, which makes this the most reliable late-night block in Manhattan on a weeknight.

Midtown and Hell's Kitchen. Empanada Mama on Ninth Avenue and Tick Tock Diner by Penn Station are the anchors. Koreatown, a few blocks east, runs later than almost anywhere else in the city; Itaewon Pocha goes until 4am on weekends.

Uptown. Sylla in East Harlem is open until 2am every day. Uptown late-night options are thinner than downtown, so plan ahead.

Brooklyn and Queens. Kellogg's Diner in Williamsburg and Court Square Diner in Long Island City run all night. The Commodore covers Williamsburg's bar crowd until the kitchen closes. If you are out in Bushwick or Ridgewood, a cab to Kellogg's is often the move.

A few late-night rules

Carry a little cash; card machines break at 3am. Tip the overnight staff generously, because they are working the hardest shift in the city. Be kind to the line. And if you are sharing a table at a 24-hour diner at 4am, you have to talk to the people next to you. That is the law.

How to use this list

Plan for the day of the week. Friday and Saturday are easy: Katz's, Veselka and Empanada Mama will all be open no matter when you show up. Weeknights are harder, so lean on the true 24-hour spots (Empanada Mama, Coppelia, Donut Pub, Kellogg's, Court Square, Tick Tock).
